Musica Sacra + Songs of the Divine at St. John's the Divine last night

Musica Sacra + Songs of the Divine

At St. John the Divine last night.

Musica Sacra Chorus.
Maestro Kent Tritle, Music Director
Maestro Michael Sheetz, Assistant Music Director

Maestro Kent Tritle conducted last night at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine the Chorus Musica Sacra in a magnificent program of songs of praise.

The program included the following pieces:

Os Justi                                                    Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)
Hark, I hear the Harps Eternal art Alice Parker (1925 -)
City Called Heaven Traditional Spiritual
Janet Pittman, soprano
Alleluia                                                     Randall Thompson (189901984)
The Lamb Robert Convery (1954-)
An American Kedushah Alice Parker
Sara Murphy, mezzo-soprano
John Tiranno, tenor
Op. 16 Deutsche Motette Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
Christine Price, soprano
Sara Murphy, mezzo-soprano
John Tiranno, tenor
Joseph Beutel, bass-baritone
Now is the Cool of the Day Jean Richtie (1922-2015)
Spem in alium                                          Thomas Tallis (c.1505-1585)

Very difficult program performed masterly by the ensemble of some 40 voices and the excellent soloists which he chose for this program, sopranos Janet Pittman and Christine Price, mezzo-soprano Sara Murphy, tenor John Tiranno and bass-baritone Joseph Beutel.

While beautifully holding the pieces and their message together in a cohesive and expressive way throughout, Maestro Tritle managed some effects in that enormous space which are still resonating in my heart.

Beautiful voices, beautiful sounds which became mesmerizing phrases that mingled with each other in a music making fashion which I have not heard in a long while.

My standing ovation and applause to Maestro Tritle, to the ensemble and soloists, as well as to Maestro’s assistant, Mr. Michael Sheetz, for a magnificent performance.

VM Ltd

The Pier Miranda Ferraro workshop series presents:

End of Spring and beginning of Summer 2,015 workshops

Our workshop series will continue this year with main selections of the following tittles: Lucia di Lammermoor, Tosca, IV Act of Il Trovatore, I Act of Un Ballo in Maschera and Don Carlo. Solo highlights of these operas will be studied thoroughly in regards to musical structure and its application to the interpretation of these works of art, under the supervision of Maestro Brian Holman, tenor Francisco Casanova. and Yumi Hashimoto at the piano.

At the arrival to these workshops, the participants must have memorized the words and music completely, in order for this work to benefit them.

Singers interested in participating in these workshops should write to info@veramusicaltd.com.

Do come and prepare yourselves, at a very reasonable cost to you, the future repertory that you will be singing.  A professional singer should have many thoroughly prepared roles in his repertoire prior to being  hired - instead of learning a score at the last minute.

Epiphany, Merry Christmas... hu...!?

06-I-2,016

For us who grew up Catholic, today is Epiphany, a very beautiful day in our tradition in which children get gifts, just like the tradition of Northern latitudes with Santa Claus.

Yesterday I was driving in my neighborhood, what a beautiful day, such tropical quality in the light of the sun so bright yellow, it warmed the heart in spite of the terrible cold embrace that enveloped Southenr New England and all of North America. It reminded me of the color of the light of January 5th 1967, when at 9 years of age I still believed that the Three Wise Men, or the Three Magician Kings (as we call them), come to each house and deliver gifts for children, as Santa does on December 25th. That afternoon my father sent me to the fields to get a lot of grass for the camels, horses, donkeys and mules in which Los Tres Reyes Magos de Oriente carried the gifts. Other things I had to get was Rum, Beer, Cigarettes, Cookies, Mint Caramels... all the brands my father liked... HM... I was really innocent, and my dear father ALFREDO CHAHIN-MUFDY  made such a fuzz on Epiphany that it totally blinded me, and did not let me suspect one Jota of the truth.

His Epiphany stunts were never equaled then or since. It is not love talking.

But that is another story.

I had a rude awakening the next morning when I found out from my mother that it was not so...

But that is, also, another story.

Today is Epiphany.

But today is THE REAL CHRISTMAS, as my friend of a life time Yeoryia Megremis calls it.

This is the day in which the Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas. In fear of what Yeoryia might do to me, I must say Greek Orthodox Church.

My Paternal family, it just so happens, back in the land that gave birth to all of them, Palestine, -in their old town of Beit-Jala-, those who were religious practiced the Orthodox Religion in the Church of St. Nicholas, which was built by my great-grandfather Yadallah El-Mufdy. (What a beautiful name my great-grandfather's. It means: The hand of God which is generous to a fault). They still remembered him, they knew who he was in town when I went to visit in the year 2,000, precisely for his generosity and his behavior during the war of 1,917...

But that is another story.

Together with my dear Yeoryia Megremis, today I celebrate Christmas again, I also celebrate Epiphany with all my Catholic friends.

I am a man who wears many hats. But my heart is steady.

Filled with Joy as I am, I will get on my BUICK in a few hours and drive to the Big Apple in this cold day... 19º...

But my heart is warm.

I wish all, friends and foes, a very happy and blessed day. May this day, may the Three Wise Men from the Orient deposit in our hearts some Wisdom, Thirst for Justice, and do away with our pettiness.

Blessings to all.
